Calming people who

experience nightmares

From desk- and field research we concluded that people get nightmares because of four happenings.

• Stress/ no control
• Scary movie and stories
• Trauma processing
• Alcohol and drugs

We devided those points between the three of us and I focused on the persons who get nightmares because of scary movies and stories. I analyzed the answers from the questionnaire and by doing this I defined the usergroup: people who get nightmares from movies and stories and their nightmare creature: the zombie ish creature. They got the nightmares because the sound and visuals are triggering. Below you see the analysis, the persona and their creature.

BKOR Collection
So I looked into our collection and I found out that

BKOR states that three artists of t heir whole collection

make surrealistic art, and those three artists are also

in our collection.

• Karel Appel (Maanlandschap)

• Florentijn Hofman (Bospoldervos)

• Onno Poiesz (Kryptonian Ice Lake)

Surrealism: inspired by fantasies, dreams and nightmares. The art is unexpexted, innovativeand includes shoking combinations.

GOAL OF THE INTERFACE: Seeing other nightmares visualisations and get challenged to sell their own nightmare creature of the BKOR nightmares. By using this interface you can buy a nightmare art work (experience).
When testing I am not testing if my content is scary enough or if my visualisation is right, since I am the artists and my content is my representation of the Applecave Nightmare. But what I do want to test is what content would be the most suitable for this platform (according to their opinion). So what I want to test:

Concept:
Before pitching concept:
- What would you do when you see this QR code/ poster?
- What do you think when you open the the QR code?

After pitching concept:
- Why is this platform appealing for you?
- Why is this platform not appealing for you?
- Do you know any more artworks from the BKOR that would fit in this concept aswel?

Content
- What content is the most appealing for you, when you would like to buy a nightmare?
- Would you be triggered to make content yourself? Why is(n't) that?

Platform --> just let them use the platform afterwards I want to know these questions:
- What do you think of the navigation through the platform?
- What do you think of the layout and colors?
- What can be added to the platform?
- What can be removed of the platform?

TEST 1.1: CONCEPT
What: What do they think when they see/ open it and what do they think of the attractiveness of platform.
Which: Text and the first prototypes of the platform
Where: Digital
Who: The gathered people that are enjoying their own nightmares and get inspired by them.
How: By text, pictures and recordings

TEST 1.2: CONTENT
What: Which content is the most appealing and are they triggered to join the concept?
Which: The photographs made by me about my visualisation of the Applecave Nightmare.
Where: Digital
Who: The gathered people that are enjoying their own nightmares and get inspired by them.
How: By text, pictures and recordings

TEST 2: PLATFORM
What: What they think of the platform.
Which: The second prototypes of the platform (based on the outcomes of test 1)
Where: In real life, near the art work and at school.
Who: Passengers & the gathered people that are enjoying their own nightmares and get inspired by them.
How: By film, recording and text.

During my elective 'Body of Art' I got inspired

by the concept of 'Sound Poems'

Hugo Ball is a great example for these

experimental, inhumane and scary sounds.

A sound poem gives an inhumane and kind of

creature crawling vibe. So I decided that I want

this creature that I am making, also makes sound.

The process of the sound making was actually a lot of fun.

It was a lot of trial and error. Everything that was made

I had to think: does this sound like the creature that I am

creating for the Applecave nightmare. Is this also a sound

that the people that I did interview in the beginnen do

recognize? Is this creature like or is this more human like?

Several sounds are made by a mixing pannel but the most sounds

your hear are made by me and Boris by voice.

Also a few attributes are used, for example a hot water bottle and a

piece of metal and a metal pipe to make scratching sounds.

The sound poem is used for the teaser video, that you can see

below on the right.

The whole sound fragment is also placed below.
During this phase there was a lot of unknowing but in

the end it results in knowing a lot!

I have had the most fun in learning all the methods, techniques and experimenting with all the materials.

- I learned how to work with Adobe XD & Anima

- I learned how to work with latex

- I learned how to work in the photostudio and use it's software

- I earned how to work in the sound studio and use it's software

- I was experimenting with wearables and making 3D objects

Because of the possibility of experimenting all those things I feel very happy about the whole

process and that I learned to work with all those techniques, methods and programmes.

Have FUN!!

After a meeting with Kimmy I realised it would be a very nice improvement to make the website
a bit more nightmarish.

So I took the nightmare elements to the website:
- unexpected
- uncontrollable
- fear/ scary factor

I did some additions to the website to include those unexpected, uncontrollable and scary factors.
You can see it in the final interface.

Another thing Kimmy told me is to think about the typography and hierarchy of the text again. Think about:
What is a title, what is the logo, what is the body, what is a button etc.

After the last feedback meeting with Maytall I realised that I had to change the website a bit. There was still too mucht text on the website and the text is too small to read properly on a mobile phone. Also the buttons weren't clear enough (this was also stated in the test results).

Another thing: I chose to combine the 'The Applecave Nightmare' page together with the 'About the Applecave Nightmare'.
After meeting with Megan:

If you are buying a nightmare that should be

unexpected, think of what are you showing allready

and what do you that your usergroup wants to know?

That is why I chose to make a vage teaser,

show not too much pictures

and don't tell right away what the nightmare, that

you can buy, is about.
HOW IT WORKS:

At the public space where the art works are, there is a QR code:
When scanning the QR code a performance video of the nightmare creature will be shown (made by me) this is my nightmare vision on the 'Appelgrot' from Karel Appel.

From there on the website starts. Based on a very specific selection of BKOR works artists can make their own nightmare version of this BKOR collection. They can buy and sell it to trigger, inspire, get and give nightmares.

I was a little bit lost in the usergroup aspect. I wanted to focus on the creatures of the nightmare (so the creatures that appear in your nightmares) but since the assessment made me very clear it should be about the person having the nightmare, I had to focus on something else. So the research that we did about four types of persons, experiencing nightmares, and their nightmare creature was not what I was going to focus on.

So I was searching for something online, I didn't know what, but I was browsing and browsing not knowing what I was looking for. Then I found this:

INSIGHTS RESEARCH COLLECTION
IMPORTANT

FOR

PROCESS
SO...

I found it very intersting that there is a group of people that are actually liking their nightmares. They get inspired by their nightmares for the art they make, they get thrilled by their nightmares and like the fear they feel. They like to be the moviestar of their own horror movie.

By knowing this I decided to focus on

the people that want to get scarred,

that want to get triggerd to get

nightmares or that like the thrills you

get from nightmares.

CONCEPT: BUY A NIGHTMARE

Zoom out to get a nice overview and see the insights of the collection on the right.
So I started reasearching 'how to trigger nightmares'. by researching I didn't find anything except for the few herbs you can take to have more vivid dreams.

After looking to many pages I realised that it is not so common that people want to actually trigger their nightmares or that there is no platform for people who like their nightmares.

I was still doing research and I thought I wasn't going to find anything about this subject, but then I stumbled upon this advertisement from google:

This was something for me to work with.
When I opened this link I came to the website of Bol.com and I could buy a childrens book called 'Nachtmerries'. So again, this was not what I was looking for.

So I decided that I want to create a platform where people, who actually do like their nightmares, can get triggered and inspired by nightmares. Nightmares you do create yourself or someone who creates it for you.
IMPORTANT

FOR

PROCESS
By talking to Arjen we discussed how the BKOR

collection could be intergrated in my concept. He

came with the idea to find out if there are any

surrealism artists in the BKOR collection, since

surrealism often is inspired by fantasies, dreams,

nightmares, thoughts etc
IMPORTANT

FOR

PROCESS

At first we made a collection of the collection of BKOR based on very basal aspects. It was devided on litteral aspects of our research. So look of a nightmare, the history/ concept of an art work (linked to the history of scary stories), the name of the art work and the location of the art work.

Then we got the feedback of our first assessment and we had to take a look at it again. We wanted to dive deeper so we based the new collection on more symbolic and illustrative levels. Within symbolic the archetypes are returning.

Illustrative

Symbolic
Focus on these three Artists and artworks I am starting to create my concept.

Potential fonts:

Chosen font and why:
This font is called Who Asks Satan and is downloaded from Dafont.com.

I did chose for this font to use it as the logo font because for me it really gives a
nightmarish feeling. It is scratching and not neat, which I also sketched in the first class.
This font is used for the titles and buttons. I did not want to have more than three
font because for me a lot of different fonts is making something chaotic and not
easy to read. Impact is a nice font to make something stand out. Especially when Avenir
is the font for the body, which is clean and clear.
Avenir is the. font that is used for all the body text. This font is used because it gives a
clear and clean look, easy to read. And since the font 'Who Ask Satan' is intens and
'screamy' it is nice to have something calm and clean to have some contrast.

Buy a nightmare.

A platform that allows the usergroup to meet like minded people who make art inspired on their nightmares.
It allows to sell the art that is based on nightmares or creates a nightmare for someone else.
It is all about making, sharing, giving and getting nightmares.
This platform can be seen as the nightmare Etsy version.
The BKOR Nightmare version selling and buying point.

To see the testing phase

detailed and explained click here.
This interface is about making,

sharing, giving and getting nightmares.
I imediatly started with a testing plan for this concept, without even having a prototype.

Although this testing plan wasn't accurate enough so I first made a prototpe and after I made another testing plan. The protoype you will see below, the testing plan is shown on the right.
I chose to make the interface an online platform that is designed for a

mobile phone. I want to place QR code's next to the artworks so people

can scan the code next to the buildings to see the nightmare versions of it,

it should be triggering for the usergroup so that is why I made the QR code

(see below).
To simplify it:

My usergroup: People who are enjoying their nightmares

The issue: there is no platform where these people can get nightmares (or get triggered to get them or find like minded)

The solution: A platform where people can sell and buy nightmares
Future possibility: Halloween special

All atributes and nightmare versions

will be exhibited at the specific artwork.
Price: I asked two testing persons what a normal price for a nightmare would be. For the applecave nightmare they stated 'The price of a clown that you can hire for a party'. So the price is based on those prices.

After adding the price to the interface on several pages I asked them again, they gave the feedback that the website is much clearer now and the price is a good addition.

Buttons: The buttons are now movable buttons. When the button is tapped it will move (animation). Also there is a block created around the text to see the difference between text and button. Lastly, the buttons have another font now: Impact.

Text: The text is shortened and sharpened. Less text, more bulletpoints, it is bigger: so easier to read and the introduciton are bold. This to make the reading much easier.

Logo: The logo of the website now is 'Buy a Nightmare' The font: Who asks satan, now only is used for the logo instead of for every title and subtile on every page. Also the logo is placed on the exact same spot on every page.
Explanation things I added

after test results:

Additional note: now in the end I realise that my interface would maybe function better in a website format for computers. I still present is as an platform designed for mobile phone since the QR code is still in the concept, I only want to let you know that I do see potential in making the platform designed for computers.
So after addapting the outcomes of the testing phase, the discussed points with Kimmy and Maytall , everything works and
the navigation of the website is clear.
