First interface idea BKOR app

Initial concept and visualisation

Sketches/notes

Switch to book
After receiving feedback from the teachers and reflecting on the idea I realised that there were a few flaws in it that I needed to fix.

1. The audience for an app like this would be too broad. It isn’t focused enough on people who have nightmares/creatures of the night.

2. Making a prototype of an app is something I have no experience with and therefore my final project would feel insufficient too me as I’d rather be able to present my prototype realised fully.

So I rethought my idea and transformed it into something that I would think works better.

A book with different routes along fears that are prevalent in peoples nightmares. The book would focus on exploring these fears, with routes that focus on BKOR art pieces relevant to the fears. The user would be asked to reflect on their fears and the routes with questions along the way. This idea better focuses in on the audience group and also engages better with the BKOR pieces.

First draft for cover

and introduction
I started looking at BKOR pieces on their website that played into the fear of the dark. Once I found one I looked around on the map function of BKOR for art works near it that also played into the dark. I wrote a short summary of all the descriptions of BKOR pieces for next to the map. I mapped out the route between them on google maps. For the design of the map I used snazzymaps.com to get a nicer looking map. I then traced the route over it in photoshop and added the name of the route and the time it would take. For the instructions of how to walk I used google maps and wrote down each step one by one. At the same time I wrote the questions for during the route.

I mostly found BKOR pieces related to the dark, loss and abstraction, so I repeated the same process for the loss and abstract route.

Feedback prototype 1.0
After showing prototype 1.0 to teachers and classmates I got some feedback that was useful to improve my interface.

1. Most importantly that the black background works well with the "night" aesthetic but doesn't actually work at night. In the dark this would be difficult to read

2. Due to the black background the interface is hard to use as not a lot of people have white pens.

3. The information page is cluttered and showing the BKOR pieces and information about them beforehand ruins the surprise.

Improvements
So using this feedback I improved my interface in the following ways.

1. Changed the background to white and the text to black because: Its easier to read in the dark and Its easier to write on.

2. Moved the introduction of the routes to the map pages

3. Moved the information and pictures of the BKOR pieces to the end of the routes

Feedback prototype 2.0
After testing out prototype 2.0 there were a few critiques that were most prevalent and/or important.

1. There was no aesthetic difference between the questions and the instructions which read confusing.

2. There weren't enough questions to really help reflect on the experience. The "What did you take away from it?" question wasn't enough.

3. All the questions are were focused on the moment, there is no reflection later.

4. The pictures of the BKOR pieces were mainly taken overday and didn't fit what they looked like at night

5. The pictures of the BKOR pieces ruined the memory of the pieces.

6. There was no real end to the interface

Improvements
Using this feedback I once again reflected upon my interface and made some improvements:

1. I changed the font of the instructions and the introduction to contrast the questions. Making it clearer what the instructions where and what the questions were.

2. I added an extra page with questions after each route in order to reflect more on the route.

3. I added an extra page of questions to be answered 2 weeks after walking the route. I did this to provide an opportunity to reflect on the route later and see if it had any consequences on the user's fears

4. I removed the pictures of the BKOR pieces and instead added in a blank box where the user has to draw the BKOR piece from memory, this then ties into the extra questions.

5. I added a final reflection to the end of the book to conclude the interface.

Physical prototype
For the physical prototype I wanted:

1. The user to always be looking at one page at a time

2. The book to be easy to write on

3. The book to be easy to walk around with

To achieve this I printed the book one sided, perforated
holes into the sides and added rings. This way the pages can be flipped the whole way around resulting in the user always looking at one page at a time and having a comfortable grip on the book so it is easy to write on and walk around with.
